About the museum
The idea for the Geländewagenmuseum arose in the first half of the 1990s among owners of vintage off-road vehicles, who met while searching for vehicles, spare parts, and the history of the GDR off-road vehicles. Many had acquired their vehicles from the dissolved NVA (National People's Army) stocks. From these first meetings grew the wish for an exhibition on four-wheel-drive technology in the GDR.
The concept quickly expanded: the museum shows Kübel and off-road vehicles from several countries, since the East German designs can hardly be understood without their predecessors and Western counterparts. Across roughly 400 square meters, around twenty vehicles from five manufacturing countries (Soviet Union, Great Britain, GDR, USA, Germany) are on display, supplemented by dioramas, display cases, information boards, sectional models, and contemporary equipment.
The exhibits change regularly, so the exhibition is both a permanent and a temporary one. Many vehicles originally had a military purpose; the museum places them in their historical context without glorifying the military. The operator is the association 1. Technische Schauanlage für Kübel- und Geländewagen Reichwalde e.V.
