About the museum

The villa in the style of a Swiss country house was built in the mid-19th century in what was then the Preußisches Viertel (Prussian Quarter), right on the Prießnitz stream. From 1873 to 1879 it was the home and workplace of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887), who had left Warsaw in 1863 during the January Uprising and ultimately stayed in Dresden for more than two decades. During this time he wrote much of his enormous body of work, including the cycle on Polish history and the "Saxon Trilogy" with "Countess Cosel", "Brühl" and "From the Seven Years' War".

In 1960 the Stadtmuseum Dresden and the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw founded the museum as a joint project; it is considered Germany's first binational museum. Today it belongs to the Museen der Stadt Dresden and works closely with the Deutsch-Polnische Gesellschaft Sachsen and the Polonia-Dresden association.

The bilingual permanent exhibition presents Kraszewski's life and work and tells of Polish emigration to Saxony in the 18th and 19th centuries and of the ties between the two countries since the personal union under Augustus the Strong and Augustus III. Special exhibitions, readings, films and the Polish-German Festival Days explore the culture and history of the neighboring country; the museum is also involved in the Dresden–Wrocław town twinning.
