About the museum

In 1996, the Dresden metal designer and photo artist Volkmar Fritzsche opened the Galerie Kunstkeller in a villa in the Preußisches Viertel (Prussian Quarter), devoting its changing exhibitions to the theme of eros in painting, prints, sculpture, and photography. In 1999, a small cabaret stage for literary programs and performances was added, and from 2006 onward the gallery concentrated on contemporary nude photography.

After the art dealing ended in 2019, the venue was rededicated as the Museum aktfotoARTdresden. By its own account, it is the only museum in Germany that exclusively exhibits, documents, and archives nude photography as art, and it is building up a collection for this purpose. Depictions of sexual acts are excluded; the exhibition deliberately aims to offer a counterpoint to commercialized images of the body.

Every September, a new annual exhibition opens in which ten photographers hang side by side in uniform print formats, so that their individual styles can be compared. Since 2023, the Freundeskreis Museum Aktfotokunst Dresden (friends' association) has supported the museum and is intended to run it in the long term; among other things, it organizes evening talks with the exhibiting photographers.
