About the museum
The museum's foundation is a donation from Cathedral Canon Dr. Jürgen Lenssen, who was parish priest in Glattbach from 1981 to 1989. The sponsor is the municipality of Glattbach, which has continually expanded the holdings through private donations and purchases. From the opening until 2007 the museum was directed by former mayor Friedolin Bernhard, after which Leni and Jürgen Stenger took over, and from 2014 Jürgen Stenger alone.
The museum shows an ethnologically oriented collection of nativity scenes from five continents and more than 85 countries, of which over 450 pieces are on display. The figures and scenes are made of bronze, pewter, wood, straw, clay, wax, ivory or even pumpkin shells, and show how folk artists around the world transfer the Christmas story into their own culture.
A special piece is the Iglauer Familienkrippe (Iglau family nativity scene), completed in 2014/2015 by the then museum director and volunteers. The show is complemented by a worldwide collection of Christmas stamps and a library of German-language nativity scene literature. The museum is housed in a half-timbered house.
