About the museum
Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau had the small country house built between 1774 and 1778 by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff as a private residence for his wife Louise. In 1780 the house and garden were named Luisium after her. The cube-shaped building with its crowning belvedere is a typical example of Erdmannsdorff's architecture.
Inside, the small rooms, reduced to living purposes, are largely original in their furnishings. Especially on the first upper floor they have fine Neoclassical stucco and wall paintings with Pompeian influences. On the ground floor is a magnificent hall whose ceiling painting identifies the house as the "Temple of Feminine Virtues".
The palace is surrounded by a 14-hectare English landscape garden with a Schlangenhaus (Snake House), orangery, gatehouses and a ruin arch, as well as a farm section for fruit and vegetables. From 1779 onward, a neo-Gothic stud farm was built within sight, as an "ornamented farm". A sightline leads to the Walderseer Church, in whose tower lies the burial vault of the princely couple.
