Kunsthalle Lingen
Exhibition venue of the Kunstverein Lingen for contemporary art in a hall of the former railway repair works; free admission on Fridays.
About the museum
The Kunstverein Lingen goes back to a free initiative by artists and art enthusiasts who in 1978 launched a painting and creativity school. From it grew an association that took the name Kunstverein Lingen on June 2, 1983. In the same year the Lingener Kunstpreis was awarded for the first time, which to this day supports young painting with a solo exhibition and a catalog.
On October 12, 1997, the association opened the Kunsthalle in Hall IV of the former railway repair works on Kaiserstraße. The workshops had been established from 1856 on the Hanoverian Western Railway; the present exhibition hall was built in 1908. After the works closed in the 1980s, the city of Lingen acquired the site and converted it into a location for culture, education, and media.
The Kunsthalle sees itself as a place for conveying contemporary art and shows solo and group exhibitions by regionally, nationally, and internationally active artists, accompanied by lectures, artist talks, and tours. There is no permanent exhibition of its own; however, the association looks after works by the sculptor Harry Kramer, born in Lingen in 1925, who became known for kinetic wire sculptures. The founding director was Heiner Schepers; since 2009 Meike Behm has directed the house.
