About the museum

Kunsthalle Mainz goes back to an initiative of the Mainzer Stadtwerke (Mainz municipal utilities), which established the Stiftung Kunsthalle Mainz in 2007 and remains its founder and sponsor to this day. The site chosen was the boiler and engine house built in 1887 to plans by Eduard Kreyßig at the Zollhafen, an area that has since developed into a new urban quarter on the Rhine.

The architect Günter Zamp Kelp converted the industrial monument and added a tower about 21 meters high, tilted at seven degrees, which became the building's landmark. The exhibition space of about 840 square meters is divided between the hall of the old building and three stacked gallery rooms in the tower. The Kunsthalle opened in March 2008; a dedicated room for video art was added in 2012.

The institution has no collection of its own. Instead, it presents several solo and thematic exhibitions of international contemporary art each year that address current social issues. An extensive education program with public tours, workshops and the youth art school HURRA! is aimed at all age groups. The Kunsthalle also places great importance on accessibility and offers information in Easy German.
