About the museum

The KunstMuseum Donau-Ries goes back to a private initiative by the Wemding painter Annette Steinacker-Holst. In 2002 a large Bauhaus-style building was purchased and converted into a public museum and event venue; the opening attracted attention beyond the region. On more than 4,000 square meters, the building combines exhibition rooms with studios, workshops and halls for concerts, readings and theater.

From 2004, collections of regional and national artists were gradually established – first on Ernst Steinacker, a sculptor and painter born in Wemding, on Caspar Schlötter and on Annette Steinacker-Holst herself, later including Manfred Laber, Robert Müller-Moa, Günther Vogt and the sculptor Johannes Engelhardt. Since 2004 the museum has taken part in the Rieser Kulturtage, and from 2006 solo exhibitions by international guests were added. In 2007 a friends' association was founded, which has run the museum on a volunteer basis ever since.

Its hallmark is the aim not only to show art but to make it together: in 2009 the Klang-Spiel-Werkstatt (sound and play workshop) with instruments from around the world was created, and later came support programs for young art, an ensemble for music, light and poetry, and the Kunstpfad Donau-Ries. Because of its inclusive work with people with disabilities, with newcomers and with school classes, the museum has received institutional funding since 2019 from the town of Wemding, the Donau-Ries district and the Bezirk Schwaben. In 2020/21 it was expanded to include printing, photography and performance areas; since 2019 the artist group KuMuDoRi has worked closely with the museum.
