Six artworks that have entered the collection as donations are shown together with their individual histories, many of them for the first time in public; the exhibition honours the donors and invites visitors to discover artistic positions.
About the museum
The foundation of the Hochheim art collection was laid by the collector couple Liane and Hermann Rosteck, who had been gathering art since the 1960s and personally got to know many of the artists while traveling in the Mediterranean. The city of Hochheim initially received the collection as a permanent loan; it is now owned by the city.
Museum operations became possible when the city inherited the neoclassical Villa Burgeff on Mainzer Straße in 2000. The villa was formerly the home of the Burgeff family, owners of the Hochheim sparkling wine cellar. The museum of modern and contemporary art opened in the villa's basement in 2002.
Across roughly 130 square meters in seven rooms, it shows paintings, sculptures and graphics of the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell. The collection comprises around 400 works; a selection of about one hundred pieces is on display, supplemented by changing exhibitions. A central piece is Vostell's large-format panel painting "Die vier andalusischen Prinzipien." The program includes short tours, creative courses and a children's art workshop.
