About the museum
Mining in the Urfftal valley near Bergfreiheit can be documented since 1552. With the granting of mining rights (Bergfreiheit) on September 14, 1561, the miners' village was founded, which has borne its name ever since. In the 16th century around a thousand people lived there, and about 20 kilometers of tunnels extended through the district. For over four centuries, mining, hammer works and iron foundries shaped the region.
Today the deposit has no economic but only historical significance. The Bertsch mine was opened to visitors in 1974. The roughly 450-year-old tunnels are preserved in their original condition and show how hard the miners' work was in the Middle Ages. The tours connect the history of Kellerwald ore mining with the village's Snow White motif, for example with the pointed caps (Zipfelmützen), which served as the miners' first protective helmets in the form of padded hoods.
