About the museum
The roots of the Fritzlar Cathedral Museum go back to the Benedictine monastery founded by Boniface in 724. The monastery gave rise to the first Hessian monastery school, and the oldest manuscripts of the cathedral library, which range from the 8th to the 16th century, also date from the monastery period. St. Peter's Cathedral, a Romanesque-Gothic church, was raised to the rank of minor basilica in 2004. Its crypt holds one of the most important Romanesque sandstone figures north of the Alps, the figure of Saint Peter, as well as the high tomb of the first abbot, Wigbert.
The museum uses the former monastery rooms around the cloister and the Grashof (courtyard). Its centerpieces include the Heinrich Cross from around 1020 and a disc reliquary that, according to tradition, holds a comb of Boniface. Further holdings include vestments and altar hangings, sculptures, a vaulted lapidarium with Carolingian sarcophagi and architectural fragments, and the music room with its painted walls, ceiling and door decoration and a cabinet from the 14th century.
After a redesign of the permanent exhibition under the title “Glaube sinnlich erfahren”, the cathedral museum reopened on September 7, 2021. It is run by the Catholic cathedral parish of St. Peter and works with the Diocese of Fulda. Besides the regular tour, it offers numerous guided tours, night tours and an escape game in the cloister.
