About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Bad Wildungen occupies a half-timbered house on Lindenstraße, built in 1672. Since 1938 the building has served as the municipal museum for the history of the town and its surroundings.
The permanent exhibition runs from prehistory to the 1950s. A nearly complete crouched burial from the Neolithic period is among the exhibits, supplemented by other archaeological finds from the region. Medieval legal documents and objects from the Thirty Years' War tell the town's story, while reconstructed rooms bring earlier living conditions to life. These include a 20th-century classroom and a living and working room in the style of the 1950s; topics such as food storage, hygiene and school life are also covered.
A special feature is the collection of hook guns, said by the Geopark GrenzWelten to be the largest in Europe, including a piece from the 14th century found in the area. An audiovisual presentation also explains the altarpiece by Conrad von Soest, created around 1400, one of the important German panel paintings of its time. The house belongs to the municipal museums of Bad Wildungen, which also include the Quellenmuseum in the Wandelhalle and the Museum Historisches Bergamt.
