About the museum
The Kustodie is the university's central institution for art and cultural heritage. It looks after the art collection of the university founded in 1409, which grew over centuries through endowments, acquisitions and bequests, and is dedicated to collecting, preserving, researching and mediating.
Particularly significant are the artworks from the University Church of St. Pauli, which was blown up in 1968, including the late Gothic Pauliner Altar and numerous epitaphs. Today they are on display in the Paulinum on Augustusplatz, the new building that recalls the church and serves as an assembly hall and place of devotion.
The permanent exhibition on the first floor of the Rektoratsgebäude on Ritterstraße combines a tour of university history with selected masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the 20th century: paintings, sculpture, graphic art and applied arts, from the scepter pair of 1476 to portraits of Luther from Cranach's circle. The building was erected in 1860/61 as a royal palace.
In addition, the Kustodie presents changing exhibitions in the Galerie im Neuen Augusteum, offers guided tours and, with Forum Take5, runs an education program for schools and students.
