About the museum

In the winter of 1944/45, the airfield between Hailfingen and Tailfingen was to be expanded for night fighters. In addition to prisoners of war and forced laborers, 601 Jewish prisoners were put to work there from November 19, 1944; they came from the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig (Gdańsk) and most had previously been in Auschwitz. The camp was a subcamp of the Natzweiler concentration camp; a fenced-in aircraft hangar served as their quarters.

The men, from 16 countries, were forced to work in quarries, on the runway, and on taxiways. Cold, hunger, disease, and lack of care cost many of them their lives. In mid-February 1945, the camp was dissolved and the survivors were taken to other concentration camps. Graves of prisoners lie in the cemeteries of Tailfingen, Reutlingen, and Esslingen.

The history of the camp was only examined at a late stage. Following a documentary film in 2008, a memorial to the 601 Jewish prisoners was dedicated on the former runway in June 2010. Volunteers set up a documentation center with a multimedia exhibition in Tailfingen's old town hall, in which 15 survivors speak in interviews.

The memorial site is run by the association KZ Gedenkstätte Hailfingen Tailfingen e. V. Other places of remembrance include a memorial pillar (Denk-Pfeiler) for prisoners of war and forced laborers, a sculpture trail, and the former mass grave. As part of the Natzweiler camp complex, the site is part of the European Heritage Label.
