About the museum
The museum in Meetzen, a village part of Holdorf west of Schwerin, goes back to the fire service historian Uwe Rosenfeld. He set it up in 1995 in a former agricultural machinery workshop. In 2001 the building was designated the Landesfeuerwehrmuseum (state fire service museum) for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
On a site of about 10,000 square meters, the museum shows on about 2,000 square meters of exhibition space how fire services in the state and in the Nordwestmecklenburg district have developed since the founding of the first fire brigades around the mid-19th century. Alongside hand pumps, equipment and uniforms, numerous operational vehicles, trailers and large equipment belong to the collection.
The museum is affiliated with a restoration workshop for large vehicles, a literature archive and its own company fire brigade. It is run by an association whose members work predominantly on a volunteer basis. Since 2017 the Internationales Atemschutzmuseum (International Respiratory Protection Museum) has also been part of the same site; on the upper floor of a hall it presents breathing apparatus, gas masks and filters from around the world. The museum lies in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve and is a partner of the reserve.
