Museumsanlage Gadebusch

City museum in the former district barn below the Renaissance palace, covering prehistory through the GDR era, with a diorama of the 1712 battle.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum complex lies at the foot of the Schlossberg hill, in the former outer bailey of Gadebusch's Renaissance palace, directly by the Burgsee lake. The museum building, the former district barn, was converted into a cultural center for the town through many hours of volunteer work and was officially opened on July 1, 2006, during the Münzfest festival. The building also houses the tourist information office and a multipurpose room.

The museum presents a selection of exhibits on town and regional history: finds from prehistory and early history, remains left by the Slavic inhabitants, objects from the Middle Ages and from Gadebusch's time as a princely residence, as well as topics on the Battle of 1712, Theodor Körner, the 19th and 20th centuries, and GDR history. The highlight is a diorama of the Battle of Gadebusch, the largest battle fought on Mecklenburg soil.

Between October 2023 and September 2024, an accessible redesign of the museum was developed together with kultursegel gGmbH, the town of Gadebusch and the Förderverein Renaissanceschloss und Museum Gadebusch, as part of the "Zukunftsschloss Gadebusch" project. Special exhibitions and events supplement the program throughout the year; the complex is also the starting point of the Gadebusch Legends and Fairy Tales Route.
