About the museum
After the great town fire of 1863, a neo-Gothic town tower with an adjoining hospital (Spital) was built on the Further Schloßplatz in place of the Pflegerschloss, a former administrative castle. The collections of the Landestormuseum, which is run by the town of Furth im Wald, are now housed in this group of buildings.
The exhibition so far has been devoted to the history of the border town between Bavaria and Bohemia. The display "Grenzerfahrungen" (Border Experiences) spans from the Hussite Wars to the present day and shows how the border has affected Bavaria and the Czech Republic. There is also the Georgssaal (St. George's Hall) for events, and the town tower, which visitors can climb.
Right opposite is the home of the Further Drache (Further Dragon), the star of the Further Drachenstich. This festival play, which grew out of the Christian legend of St. George, is considered the oldest folk play in Germany and is listed as intangible cultural heritage. Depending on the season, either the historic festival dragon or the current high-tech dragon is shown.
Since August 17, the building has been closed for comprehensive renovation and a redesign of its content. In the Interreg project "Connecting Border" with the Czech partner town of Domažlice, a new permanent exhibition, "Heimat – Grenze – Drache" (Homeland – Border – Dragon), is being created. It combines urban development, border history and festival culture, and uses media stations and a digital city model.
