About the museum
The Kötztinger Pfingstritt (Pentecost ride) goes back to a vow made in 1412 and is one of the largest field rides in Europe. Every year around 700 riders take part. The Pfingstritt-Museum preserves the history of this custom.
The museum is housed in the Kirchenburg (fortified church) of Bad Kötzting, a late medieval fortification that includes a cemetery, church and castle. The house is small but holds a rich collection of material on the equestrian pilgrimage and the symbolic Pentecost wedding that follows it.
Among the exhibits are a market banner from the end of the 18th century, regarded as the first pictorial source of the Pfingstritt, precious virtue wreaths and so-called Favoriten, horse decorations, the riders' costumes and the dress of a Pentecost bride from the 19th century. Photographs show the historical and present-day significance of the custom.
