About the museum
The Förderverein (friends' association) Fahrradmuseum Arnschwang was founded on April 17, 2006. Its aim was to set up a museum in this town on the border with the Czech Republic that traces the development of the bicycle and of cycling. For this purpose, the listed former Rossumspannstation from 1845 in the center of the village was made available. During the salt trade, travelers on the route from Regensburg to Pilsen swapped exhausted horses for rested ones there.
The conversion was funded by the Free State of Bavaria and the European Union; the museum opened in summer 2014. The exhibition traces almost two hundred years of bicycle history, from its beginnings to recent developments, and shows the bicycle both as a means of transport and as sports equipment.
The house sees itself as an out-of-school learning venue: visitors are invited to look closely at the exhibits and explore them through conversation. In addition, there is a teaching workshop with cycling instruction and workshops, and the Arnschwanger Radlcafé.
