Landschaftsmuseum Angeln/Unewatt
Decentralized open-air museum in Unewatt (Langballig) with five museum "islands" in the village: windmill, butter mill, smokehouse, and Christesenhof.
About the museum
The Landschaftsmuseum Angeln opened on June 23, 1993, in the village of Unewatt near Langballig. Unlike classic open-air museums, it does not relocate buildings but incorporates historic structures on their original sites. A circular route through the inhabited village links five "museum islands" with the surrounding cultural landscape of Angeln – an approach modeled on the ecomuseum concept.
The stations include the Christesenhof, with an 1895 barn for farm machinery and rotating exhibitions; the "Fortuna" smock windmill with gallery from 1878; the reconstructed butter mill with water wheel and rotary butter churn; and the 1894 smokehouse, with the transformer house opposite dating from the early days of rural electrification. The Marxenhaus, a hall house relocated from southern Angeln, burned down on June 29, 2024; its site remains part of the tour.
The museum is run by the Kulturstiftung des Kreises Schleswig-Flensburg (cultural foundation of the Schleswig-Flensburg district) together with the Amt and municipality of Langballig. Due to budget cuts, the 2026 season could only be offered in a shortened form with the support of the friends' association.
