About the museum

The Yachting Heritage Centre opened on October 1, 2016. Its initiator and backer is Oliver Berking, owner of the Flensburg silverware manufacturer Robbe & Berking, who has also run a shipyard for classic wooden yachts since 2008. The building stands right next to this shipyard at the industrial harbor in the Fruerlund district; the museum is privately funded.

The building of roughly 1,500 square meters, designed by Flensburg architect Gunnar Carlsson, picks up on the industrial character of the harbor area. It houses an exhibition hall, two galleries, a museum shop, and a large restaurant looking across the harbor to the old town.

The heart of the center is a library on the history of yachting with around 8,500 volumes. It builds on the Christmann collection of antiquarian sailing literature and is regarded as the most extensive of its kind. Exhibitions change several times a year and are devoted to life by and on the water, but also feature art shows, press photography, and arts and crafts. In 2019, the America's Cup Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held outside the US for the first time – here.
