About the museum
The Pomarium is located in Winderatt near Sörup, in the Angeln landscape, on a former calf pasture behind hedgerows (Knicks). In 1987 Meinolf Hammerschmidt began collecting old fruit varieties. The trigger was the Angelner Herrenapfel, of which only one roughly 150-year-old tree was still known. Scions were cut from it, grafted onto young rootstocks and returned to gardens in the area.
By the mid-1980s the first endangered regional varieties had been planted beside the ancient trees on the grounds. The aim was to preserve endangered varieties from gardens and hedgerows before they disappeared. Within a few years, around 300 pome and stone fruit varieties had been gathered; the collection grew further through studying old variety lists and surveys on both sides of the German-Danish border.
Today the grounds hold around 700 apple and about 130 pear varieties, as well as stone fruit and medlars. The site is conceived as an ark for biological diversity: varieties are identified, documented and propagated through scions and young trees. The collection is no longer open to the public, but groups can be guided through the grounds after registration.
