Leprosenhaus Bad Wurzach
Medieval leper house in Bad Wurzach with an exhibition on the history of leprosy patients and a museum for the painter Sepp Mahler.
About the museum
The Leprosenhaus on Ravensburger Straße was built in the 13th century as accommodation for leprosy patients outside the settlement and is considered the oldest building in Bad Wurzach. As a surviving leprosarium it is a rarity in southern Germany; a memorial plaque also commemorates events of the Peasants' War in April 1525.
In the 1980s the building was extensively restored. Since then an exhibition has explained the social and medical history of medieval health care and the use of the building.
In the former living room, the painter and poet Sepp Mahler was born in 1901; his father worked at the nearby peat works. After the town of Bad Wurzach acquired works from his estate, a museum for the artist was set up on the ground floor in 1991. It shows pictures, drawings, texts and documents from six decades, complemented by a room with changing focal points. The operation and program of tours and concerts are run by a friends' association.
