Lightbox pictures from the 1990s by the Canadian photographer, in which staged scenes combine cinema and painting.
Ingvild Goetz bought her first artwork in 1969 and in the following years ran a print publishing house and the gallery “art in progress” in Zurich, Munich and Düsseldorf. In 1984 she gave up the gallery to devote herself entirely to collecting. Initially she focused on Arte Povera and American art of the 1980s; later came the Young British Artists, Gutai, Italian art after 1950 and, above all, media art. Today the collection comprises more than 5,500 works.
In 1993 she opened a collection building in Munich-Oberföhring designed by Herzog & de Meuron – the Basel firm's first exhibition building, whose seemingly floating wood-and-glass cube is regarded as an icon of contemporary architecture. In 2004 BASE 103, an underground space for film and video works, was added.
As of January 1, 2014, Ingvild Goetz donated the building and 375 media artworks to the Free State of Bavaria, making the rest of the holdings available as a long-term loan. Since then the Sammlung Goetz has continued as a state institution, working closely with the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Haus der Kunst and the Neues Museum Nürnberg.
Preliminary studies for a modernization showed that the Oberföhring building cannot be renovated economically; it and BASE 103 will remain permanently closed. As an interim solution, the “Schaufenster” opened in December 2025 in the shopping arcade of Sep Ruf's Neue Maxburg, where rotating exhibitions from the collection are on view.
