About the museum

The locomotive shed at Bayerisch Eisenstein station was built in 1877 by the Königlich privilegierte Actiengesellschaft der Bayerischen Ostbahn. It belongs to the cross-border railway complex at the end of the Waldbahn from Plattling, whose station building Bavaria and Austria built jointly and which still lies on the border with the Czech Republic today. As part of this ensemble, the shed is a listed monument.

The Bayerischer Localbahn Verein, founded in 1975 and dedicated to preserving vehicles of the Bavarian branch lines, fitted out the building as a museum through its own efforts from 1981 and has operated it since 1994. The association also maintains a depot in Landshut and runs historic trains.

The exhibition leads through the history of the Bavarian Localbahnen from 1876 to the present. On display are more than 20 vehicles, including the steam locomotive "Anna" from 1890 as the only surviving engine from the founding period of the Regentalbahn, the last surviving locomotive of the D VII class, and the sister locomotives "Deggendorf" and "Bayerwald" – one restored, the other deliberately kept in the condition in which it was retired. There are also a fireless steam accumulator locomotive, an electric railcar of the Salzburger Localbahn from 1908 and the prototype of a twin-engine railbus.

The collection is complemented by passenger and freight cars, handcars, signals, a water crane and the old signal box from Schaftlach. Outdoors stand further vehicles and two turntables.
