Portraits from Lettl's work meet painted papier-mâché heads that young people from a vocational school for students with special needs designed and commented on in response to the question "Who am I?"
About the museum
The Augsburg painter Wolfgang Lettl (1919–2008) left behind a body of work of more than 500 pictures, mostly in the Surrealist style. To keep it accessible to the public and preserve it in Augsburg, the Wolfgang Lettl – Verein zur Förderung surrealer Kunst (association for the promotion of surreal art) was founded in 1992. From 1993 to 2013, the association showed a permanent exhibition, the Lettl-Atrium, in premises of the Industrie- und Handelskammer Schwaben (Swabian Chamber of Commerce and Industry); because of renovation work there, the collection had to move out in early 2014.
After a lengthy search, the association found premises in a former furniture store on Zeuggasse, between Königsplatz and the Zeughaus. On December 18, 2019, the artist's 100th birthday, the new Lettl-Museum opened there. Well over a hundred works from 1942 to 2007 hang on around 650 square meters beneath a skylight dome, including earlier Impressionist works alongside the surreal paintings.
In keeping with the artist's wishes, the presentation does without explanatory texts: the pictures are meant to inspire viewers' own interpretations. Instead, a multimedia guide included in admission offers Lettl's thoughts on individual works, some spoken by the artist himself, and a film introduces the artist. Special exhibitions that change annually, as well as concerts and readings, round out the program of this volunteer-run museum.
