Römisches Museum Augsburg
Municipal museum on Roman Augsburg whose building has been closed since 2012; highlights are on show in the interim exhibition "Römerlager" in the Zeughaus.
About the museum
Augsburg's collection of Roman antiquities has a long history: as early as 1505, Conrad Peutinger published inscriptions from the ancient city, and in 1822 an "Antiquarium Romanum" was established, whose holdings were later taken over by the Historischer Verein für Schwaben. After stints in the St.-Anna-Kolleg and the Maximilianmuseum, a dedicated Römisches Museum opened in 1966 in the converted Dominican church of St. Magdalena. Since the 1980s, the city's archaeology department has been responsible for the scholarly care of the finds.
In December 2012 the Dominican church had to close due to structural defects. In 2015 the interim exhibition "Römerlager – Das römische Augsburg in Kisten" (Roman Augsburg in Boxes) opened in the Tuscan Column Hall of the Zeughaus, and it has stood in for the museum indefinitely ever since. The church is now being renovated and is to serve as an exhibition and event space in the future; a new Römisches Museum is planned, but no opening date has been set.
The Römerlager presents selected pieces from the history of Augusta Vindelicum in seven themed sections: a larger-than-life statue of Augustus, weapons from the early military camp at Oberhausen, a seven-meter reproduction of the Tabula Peutingeriana, trade goods and a hoard of gold coins, wooden remains of a river landing stage, and funerary monuments and images of gods. A reconstructed dining room invites visitors to recline at table, and the famous bronze horse's head is part of a tactile trail. Stacked storage crates are a reminder that most of the collection cannot currently be shown.
