Mauersberger-Museum
Musicians' museum in Mauersberg (Erzgebirge) about the church musician brothers Rudolf and Erhard Mauersberger, Kreuzkantor and Thomaskantor.
About the museum
The museum in Mauersberg, a district of Großrückerswalde, commemorates two of the best-known German church musicians of the 20th century, both of whom came from the village: Rudolf Mauersberger (1889–1971) led the Dresdner Kreuzchor as Kreuzkantor for more than four decades, and his younger brother Erhard Mauersberger (1903–1982) served as Thomaskantor in Leipzig.
The museum was established in 1973, shortly after Rudolf Mauersberger's death, initially exclusively in his memory. In 1984, the commemoration of Erhard Mauersberger was added. The core of the collection is the brothers' estate with documents on their work as cantors, choir trainers, composers, and conductors.
The estate also includes an extensive Erzgebirge collection of the Kreuzkantor, who was a passionate hobbyist. The centerpiece is a Heimatberg (miniature mountain landscape) he built himself, showing Mauersberg in the 1920s; there are also models of the Dresden Kreuzkirche and the Mauersberg fortified church. The museum is one of about 40 musicians' museums in Germany and shows changing exhibitions on the upper floor.
