About the museum

Gerhard Gebuhr founded the museum in 1984. As unit leader (Kolonnenführer) from 1959 to 1981, he had collected Red Cross items that were no longer needed in service: uniforms, identification cards, certificates, first-aid pouches and more. When his rented garages became overcrowded, the idea arose to display the items in a museum. The museum later moved into the former caretaker's building and was extended by a second floor; in 1991 the exhibition space was enlarged, and in 1994 a hall for historic ambulances was added.

Since 2001, Günther Herold has led the museum; in 2002, a friends' group was founded. Today, the museum shows the history of the Red Cross since its founding in 1863 across about 500 square meters in eight exhibition rooms and a covered vehicle hall. According to its own information, it is one of the largest museums of its kind in Germany.

The focus is on the development of patient transport: stretchers, models, 1:1 replicas of transport vehicles, and original vehicles built from 1960 onward. Also on display are, among other things, an ambulance carriage from around 1918, a wheeled litter ("Handmarie"), nurses' uniforms, service uniforms, medals, certificates and medical devices.
