About the museum

The market town of Ottobeuren had the museum built with funding from the Free State of Bavaria and the EU; after two years of construction, it opened on May 24, 2014. The architectural competition was won by Atelier Lohrer of Stuttgart. The design incorporated the surviving Hornung Hall of the former Hirschbrauerei brewery and added an extension for the entrance and utility rooms. The banded, gold- and brass-colored façade stands out against the white main structure; the building is cooled with water from the Mühlbach stream. The building was awarded the Iconic Award and the German Design Award.

The museum is named after the painter Diether Kunerth, who contributed a body of his works to a foundation. At first the museum showed only his works; since the third exhibition, it has alternated between group and solo exhibitions by other contemporary artists, usually two to three per year, on almost 2,000 square meters.

Since 2016, the museum has been run by the association Trägerverein Ottobeurer Museen. An art workshop offers courses for children and adults as well as workshops for school classes.
