About the museum
On the Ottmarsheimer Höhe above the Neckar valley, a large Roman fortified village stood in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Excavations over the last decades show that food, tools and trade goods for the forts at Walheim and Benningen were probably also supplied from here.
Visitors can see an excavated cellar with light openings, protected by a shelter roof. Text and picture panels explain the finds. About 50 meters to the west lie the remains of a Mithras temple, discovered in 1989 during the construction of a water pipeline. Because such cult sites were built underground, the sanctuary is well preserved.
The cult of Mithras, the light god from Persia, was widespread among the Romans and was open to men only. Information boards at the temple explain the cult and the excavation; the two elaborately crafted altars for the moon goddess Luna and the sun god Sol are displayed as copies. From the site there is a wide view over the Neckar valley and the vineyards. Both sites are presented by the municipality of Mundelsheim.
