About the museum

The Mobile Welt des Ostens opened on October 7, 2006, in Calau. It is run by an association of the same name, whose members own and maintain a large share of the vehicles themselves; a few donations and loans have been added. The exhibition space is the rooms of a former car dealership on Straße der Freundschaft.

On display are more than 150 vehicles built between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Wall in the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the Soviet Union, from bicycles and motorcycles to small vans and passenger cars. Alongside common everyday cars there are rare pieces, such as early Eisenach convertibles and coupes, an ambulance of a design of which only a few examples are still known, and a Soviet executive limousine of the ZIS-110 type.

On the upper floor, a collection of objects from everyday GDR life complements the vehicle display, so that a visit also works as a journey back in time to daily life between the Baltic Sea and the Ore Mountains. Most recently the exhibition space was expanded. The museum advertises itself with a tongue-in-cheek slogan: what you ordered in the GDR but often received only after years or not at all is gathered here in full.
