Limited operations. The palace is open only during the annual ROHKUNSTBAU exhibition (2026: June 13 – November 1) and on special dates; the park is freely accessible all year.
Exhibition curated by Christoph Tannert featuring 16 international artistic positions, exploring in the palace how new things come into being and whether they mean progress.
About the museum
On the site of an older moated castle, Major General Alexander Dietrich von Eickstedt had a three-story, three-wing palace built starting in 1717. Around 1749/52, the Saxon art connoisseur Carl Heinrich von Heineken remodeled the palace in the Rococo style, bringing in craftsmen from Dresden; the richly decorated interiors with wall paintings date from this period. Between 1880 and 1890, neo-Romanesque extensions, conservatories, and the distinctive onion domes were added.
The ensemble includes cavalier houses, stables, an orangery, and farm buildings, as well as a park of about 60 hectares that combines Baroque water axes, a hedge theater, and sculptural decoration with sections of a later English-style landscape garden.
After looting in World War II and decades of vacancy, the building was badly infested with dry rot by the 1990s. Since 1995 the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection) and the Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH have supported its stabilization and restoration; the foundation later took over the property itself. A youth heritage workshop (Jugendbauhütte) for historic garden conservation is based in the palace.
Today the palace hosts the annual ROHKUNSTBAU exhibition, which since 1994 has shown contemporary art in historic buildings in Brandenburg, placing the works in dialogue with the spaces. Outside the exhibition season, only the park is open to the public free of charge.
