About the museum
The village of Benthullen came into being in 1934 on the edge of the Vehne Moor, where moor, heath, and bent grass shaped the landscape. Drainage and cultivation of the land were first driven forward by the Voluntary Labor Service (Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst), and later by the Reich Labor Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst), so that new settlers could settle. In the 1950s, expellees (Heimatvertriebene) joined as further settlers.
The Moor- und BauernMuseum, run by the association of the same name, preserves machines and equipment from this founding period of the village. They show how in the 1950s horsepower was increasingly replaced by engines and how farming changed fundamentally.
Another part of the exhibition is devoted to everyday life in Germany’s postwar economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder), with new household appliances, radios, record players, and jukeboxes. A separate section is the typewriter museum. In 2021 the expanded barn (Remise) was completed; for groups there is a winter garden with a guest room.
