About the museum
A grain mill in Moisburg is recorded in documents as early as 1379. The present water mill was built in 1723 as part of the Moisburger Vorwerk (outlying farm), which became a royal domain in 1859. In 1928 the Harburg district acquired the mill and leased it to the miller Arnold Fitschen, who bought it in 1938.
The last coarse grain (Schrot) was ground in 1974; afterwards the building stood empty and decayed. The district bought the mill back in 1982 and had it comprehensively restored. In 1985 the Mühlenmuseum opened; today it belongs to the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum as a branch.
The interior shows the condition of the 1930s, when miller Fitschen lived here with his family. A permanent exhibition, redesigned in 2022, covers milling, mill building, and myths, and uses wooden models to explain the various mill types and drives. The mill is one of the last fully functioning mills in the region and drives its grinding mechanism with a water wheel.
