The exhibition is devoted to the wild animals that Baron von Münchhausen probably encountered in Russia, Latvia and Bodenwerder.
The Münchhausen Museum is housed in the Schulenburg, a rectangular tower of Bodenwerder's medieval town fortifications, built around 1350 and considered the town's oldest building. It became the residence of the castle men (Burgmannen) and later the tithe barn of the largest saddle farm (Sattelhof), which was run by the families von Bevern and von Münchhausen. Hieronymus von Münchhausen had the house remodeled in 1772.
The most recent conversion, a comprehensive renovation with substantial commitment from the town and its citizens, took place from 1999 to 2003; since then the house has been the municipal Münchhausen Museum.
The permanent exhibition documents the stages of the Baron's unusual biography and asks how the term "Lügenbaron" (Lying Baron) came about. A book collection with first editions from the mid-18th century, children's books in 50 languages and over 1,200 editions shows how the stories became a worldwide bestseller. The house sees itself as a family and storytelling museum.
