About the museum
The museum on Badallee tells the history and stories of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It shows collections on town history, climbing and the explorer Erich Wustmann (1907–1994), who was an honorary citizen of the town.
The town history spans from the settlement around 1300 through the town charter of 1479 and the importance of the Elbe as a transport route, to tourism and spa operations. Since the 18th century Schandau had been known for its healing water; the entrepreneur Rudolf Sendig made the town a sought-after spa resort with its hotels. This part of the exhibition is currently being revised.
The exhibition "Kletterwelten im Elbsandstein" is devoted to climbing in the region, which has been practiced since 1864, with original objects such as an early climbing guide, a belay ring from 1905, homemade equipment and media stations. On expeditions to indigenous groups in Scandinavia, South America and Africa, Wustmann documented their way of life; his objects and excerpts from the GDR television series about his travels are shown in a separate area. The museum archive holds, among other things, the Sächsische Elbzeitung from 1853 to 1943, spa guest lists and historical photographs.
