About the museum
The Deichdorfmuseum (dike village museum) in Bislich on the Lower Rhine is run by the Heimat- und Bürgerverein Bislich (local heritage and citizens' association). It presents itself as a "museum of dike, village and brick" for the whole region. It shows local and regional history and also tells the story of the landscape along the Rhine.
The themes are dike building and life with the river, brick production, village life in the 19th and 20th centuries, the nature and birdlife of the Lower Rhine, and the prehistory of the Rhine. One focus is the Franconian cemetery of Bislich, with the "prince" Bodi from the Frankish period and Iron Age finds; an exhibition area on it has been newly designed. The museum also refers to the Wesel section of the Niedergermanischer Limes (Lower German Limes).
The site includes several buildings, among them the Rhine Dike Barn and a building for a historic Rhine boat, whose roof of hand-struck hollow tiles and straw ridge caps shows old roofing techniques of the Lower Rhine. An archive preserves historical sources on the history of Bislich and the Lower Rhine. The association also runs a historic forge and a baking group.
