About the museum
The Städtisches Museum Wesel holds an important collection of late medieval and early modern panel paintings by Lower Rhine and Cologne masters, as well as Wesel silver. In the 1960s, parts of the Cologne art collection of Kasimir Hagen were added; it covered works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Since the 1970s, the museum has also focused on acquisitions of Lower Rhine artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Little remained of the older collection after the air raids in spring 1945. At that time, the museum's former seat, the Herzogenschloss on the Kornmarkt, was also destroyed. In the mid-1970s, the cultural center was built on the same site; it now houses the museum alongside the municipal library and the municipal stage.
In total, the collection comprises around 6,000 works from nearly all genres, including works by Derick and Jan Baegert, Joos van Cleve, Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder, Otto Pankok, and Anton Räderscheidt. The building is currently being extensively renovated. In the meantime, art projects take place in the construction areas, along with an education program in the museum studio.
