About the museum
The castle hill of Bad Belzig was already settled around 1000 BCE, and in 997 the "burgwardium belizi" was first mentioned in a document. From the 12th century the castle was the noble seat of the Counts of Belzig; in the 15th century it was expanded into a territorial fortress and in 1465 received the name Eisenhardt. Martin Luther stayed overnight in 1534 in the electoral living quarters; in 1636 Swedish troops destroyed the complex, which was later restored.
For a long time the district court (Amtsgericht) was housed in the late Gothic gatehouse. In 1956 the local history room (Heimatstube) opened there; since 1994 the museum and the town library have jointly run the castle. The town received the complex from the federal government in 1993; by 2008 the gatehouse, salt magazine, walls and keep had been renovated.
The exhibition covers the history of the castle, the Battle of Landwehr at Hagelberg in 1813, and historical crafts. It also commemorates the Reich School of the Technische Nothilfe (Technical Emergency Relief) and the women's concentration camp "Roederhof" in Belzig. From the 24-meter keep, the Butterturm, the view extends over the old town.
