About the museum
The local history museum occupies the former Holy Spirit Chapel, a late Gothic rotunda first mentioned in the 14th century, which also served as a round defensive church protecting the Leipzig city gate. After the Reformation, the building fell into ruin; in 1872 it was to be demolished, but the Prussian monument preservation office prevented this.
In 1936, the ruin was rebuilt on the initiative of the local history association and given a half-timbered upper story with a conical roof. In 1939, the museum opened, displaying the local history collections of Karl Reichhelm and Oskar Brachwitz as well as loans and donations from citizens. After 1945 and during the GDR era, many pieces were lost. In 1991, the city council resolved a thorough restoration, which was essentially completed by December of that year. Today, the Treuenbrietzen local history association runs the museum.
The exhibition covers prehistory and early history, old crafts and trades, the town's traditional associations, folk culture and famous people from Treuenbrietzen. Particularly worth seeing are an old fire engine, the cups of the Schützengilde (shooting guild) founded in 1424, and the furnishings of a pharmacy. The collection also includes historical photographs of houses, streets and Fläming costumes.
