About the museum
Roger Loewig (1930–1997) is among the important painters, draftsmen and poets of postwar Germany. His work revolves around war, flight, unfreedom and the dictatorships of the 20th century. In the GDR he was politically persecuted and arrested, and was no longer allowed to practice his profession as a teacher; after his expatriation, he lived in West Berlin.
The museum is located in the so-called Schweizerhaus above the old town of Bad Belzig, a listed residential house from around 1900, designed by Belzig architect Bruno Sacharowitz. Here lived his friend Wolfgang Woizick, with whom Loewig found refuge and a place to work from the 1960s onward. In 1977, the Woizick couple acquired the property.
The Roger Loewig Gesellschaft (society), founded in 1998, pursued the idea of a museum of its own. After initial renovation in 2007, the Stiftung Roger Loewig Haus – Museum und Gedenkstätte (foundation) was established in 2008; it has owned the house since then. In 2009 the house opened with a permanent exhibition on the second floor. From 2018 to 2021 it was comprehensively renovated and extended with a reading pavilion and modern exhibition rooms. On May 14, 2022, the Roger Loewig Haus reopened.
