About the museum
The Fährenpfortenturm was part of the medieval town fortifications of Hann. Münden; the Fährenpforte gate it is named after is first documented in 1383. In 1848 the owner of the firm Haendler & Natermann acquired the tower to produce lead shot there, and had it heightened from about 26 to about 40 meters for that purpose.
In the tower casting process, molten lead was dripped through a sieve; the drops solidified in free fall and landed in a water basin at the foot of the tower. Because of the hailstone-like lead pellets, the structure is still called Hagelturm (Hail Tower) today. Shot production continued into the 1980s.
Today the tower belongs to the town of Hann. Münden. Since 2000 the Museum der Arbeit (Museum of Labor) has displayed the preserved production facility with its associated equipment and machines, supplemented by a film about the former casting process. Visitors can also climb the stairs to the observation platform.
