About the museum
The Städtisches Museum Hann. Münden opened on July 29, 1898, in the Welfenschloss as the "Altertümer- und Eberlein-Museum" and is one of the oldest municipal museums in Lower Saxony. It grew out of two collections: a small local heritage display with archaeological finds from the tower of the Tillyschanze, and numerous plaster models by the sculptor Gustav Eberlein, who came from Münden and had them sent from his Berlin studio to the town.
The castle was built in 1501 and rebuilt in Renaissance style after a fire, starting in 1560. The museum spans several floors and presents city history, urban archaeology, and trade, shipping and transport, including objects related to Münden's staple right (Stapelrecht). Eberlein's works are a focal point.
Highlights include products of the Münden faience manufactory from the 18th and 19th centuries, and two original Renaissance chambers with wall paintings that fill the room; these can only be visited on a guided tour.
