Museum der Landschaft Eiderstedt
Regional museum in an Eiderstedt house from 1752 in St. Peter-Dorf: dike building, Haubarge, living culture, and history of the Eiderstedt peninsula.
About the museum
The museum's roots lie in Tönning: in 1902 the mayor there called on residents to donate antiquities, and a collection quickly came together. At the end of 1912 the district of Eiderstedt took over the holdings as the Kreisheimatmuseum (district local history museum), and from 1933 it was called the Eiderstedter Heimatmuseum. Until the Second World War the collection grew mainly through donations; war and the postwar period brought damage and losses.
In 1946 the district council decided on a fresh start, this time in St. Peter, because no suitable rooms were available in Tönning anymore. In September 1951 the museum opened in the so-called Haus Jensen, an Eiderstedt house with a thatched roof built in 1752 in the old village center. From 1976, the Stiftung Nordfriesland provided professional inventorying and reorganization of the holdings.
In 1998 the district of Nordfriesland gave up its sponsorship; since then, the specially founded association KulturTreff has looked after the museum on behalf of the municipality of St. Peter-Ording, and in 2004 it again became an independent regional museum. Under academic direction and with many volunteers, the exhibition has been further developed since then; in 2024 the museum received certification from the museum association.
On display are the formation of the landscape through dike building and Köge (reclaimed polders), a Haubarg model, the privileges granted by the Dukes of Gottorf, rural living culture with a Biedermeier room and costumes, as well as works by the Eiderstedt artist Hein Hoop. An information wall created by students sheds light on the Nazi era on Eiderstedt.
