About the museum
The house in the centre of Tetenbüll was built around 1765 after a great village fire and initially belonged to the tailor Tobias Peters from Oldenswort. His son Paul Tauchmann Peters, a trained joiner and carpenter, set up a shop in the entrance hall around 1820, which the family ran as a grocery and general store until the 1920s. A farm section resembling a haubarg, which stood behind the house from about 1850, was demolished in the 1950s. Descendants of the family lived in the house until 1987.
Since 1988 the listed building has belonged to the municipality of Tetenbüll. In 1991 the Förderverein Haus Peters (friends' association) was founded, which has run the house as a museum and cultural centre ever since; exhibitions have been held there since 1992. The Biedermeier shop fittings have been preserved, as well as the kitchen, living room and bedroom with furnishings from the Gründerzeit, so that living and working in a village in the 19th century can be vividly understood. The shop still serves as a sales room today.
In the gable room, the Horst Janssen Cabinet shows works by the Hamburg draughtsman, including sheets from the "Eiderland" portfolio. In 1995 the former kitchen garden was transformed into a museum garden of about 1,100 square metres with historic roses, perennials and fruit trees. Temporary exhibitions, readings, markets and concerts make the house a cultural meeting place on Eiderstedt; in 2023 it received the quality seal of the Museumslandschaft Schleswig-Holstein.
