About the museum
The three-story brick Packhaus was built in 1783 on the harbor of Tönning on the Eider River. The storehouse, about 77.5 meters long and 12.6 meters wide, offered roughly 4,000 square meters of storage space and has been a listed monument since 1965. Between 1803 and 1807 it was filled up to the roof as a substitute harbor for Hamburg goods, including spices, wine, coffee, marble and fish.
In the building, the Gesellschaft für Tönninger Stadtgeschichte e. V. (registered association) runs a permanent exhibition on the town's history. It begins with prehistory and the Viking Age, and continues through the castle and fortress of the 17th century, the livestock trade with England, crafts, trade and the Schleswig-Holstein Canal, down to the iron shipyard and the town's history in the 20th century. Items also honor well-known Tönning residents, such as the surgeon Johann Friedrich August Esmarch and the botanist Ferdinand Müller. The exhibition reopened in 2021 after extensive renovations; the early history section was newly designed.
The Packhaus is also known for its Advent calendar: since 1997, its façade has turned into the world's longest Advent calendar, at 77 meters, during the Christmas season.
