About the museum
The museum grew out of the collecting passion of gardener Sepp Schelshorn and his wife Elfriede. Over some four decades they gathered rural cultural objects and tools that were no longer needed on the farms of the area; it is considered the largest private collection of its kind in southwestern Germany.
A new farmhouse in the style of an Upper Swabian farmstead from around 1880 was built to house the collection, and the museum opened in it in 1985. It stands on the grounds of the Oberer Rotachhof and comprises, alongside the residential house with stable and barn, a wagon shed, a bake house, a granary, beehouses, and a farm garden. In 1992 a baroque farm chapel was added, dedicated to Saints Wendelin and Catherine.
The house features a fully furnished living area from around 1880. In addition there are the fittings of about 50 craft workshops, including a forge, a wheelwright's, a saddlery, a carpentry, and a shoemaker's shop, as well as a section on rural culture with traditional costumes and religious objects. In the bake house, bread is still baked and schnapps distilled from time to time.
