About the museum

The museum is run by the association Freunde der Bremer Straßenbahn (Friends of the Bremen Streetcar), founded in 1989 to rescue historic vehicles of the Bremen streetcar system and keep them in working order. With support from Bremer Straßenbahn AG, the association set up a museum in part of the Sebaldsbrück depot, which opened in October 2003. The depot itself has existed since 1926.

The exhibition tells the story of local public transport in Bremen since the first horse-drawn tram started running in 1876. Themed areas cover tickets and ticket validators, vehicle technology including controllers, the working day of drivers and conductors, and streetcar signals. The centerpiece is the vehicle collection: it ranges from horse tram car 23, dating from 1888, through motor cars from the first decades of the 20th century and postwar articulated trams to buses.

All the work is done by association members on a volunteer basis. On opening days, Museum Line 9 runs historic cars between the Hauptbahnhof (main station), Domsheide and Sebaldsbrück; the association also offers city tours, themed rides and charter trips. In the 2026 anniversary year, when the Bremen streetcar turns 150, the museum is also celebrating 100 years of the Sebaldsbrück depot.
