About the museum

The idea of a Chemnitz vehicle museum first emerged in the mid-1980s with the collector and restorer Frieder Bach, but it failed for political reasons in East Germany. After reunification, the association Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge Chemnitz was founded in 1993 and is still the museum's operator today.

The museum opened in January 1995 in the outbuildings of Klaffenbach Moated Castle. The flood of 2002 put the exhibition under water and threatened its survival, but with a great deal of help operations continued. When new fire safety requirements made a temporary move necessary, the association found a permanent home in the former Stern Garage near the city center; it reopened there in November 2008.

The Stern Garages were built of reinforced concrete in 1928 as one of the first multi-story garages in Germany and offered space on six levels for around 300 vehicles, which were brought to their parking spaces by elevator. Today the museum shows about 200 exhibits from more than 50 manufacturers on the first floor, covering roughly 1,000 square meters – from DKW and Wanderer to MZ and Diamant – and tells the story of Saxon vehicle history from the late 19th century to the present.
